J. David FeichtnerLeadership in Transition
For years we have used business management principles to refine and hone ICS and other aspects of our profession. What has been lacking are tools and/or what could be described as "tricks of the trade" for developing leaders. At the very least, tools we can use in our succession planning.
The new curriculum for fire officers from the National Fire Academy does exactly this. In our short time today, we will review some of these tools like the model process to conduct an effective crucial conversation, components of a crucial conversation, inquiry vs advocacy based conversation, paraverbal and nonverbal communication, and identifying what makes communications effective given different situations.
It is my hope that this leads to not only better succession planning and officer development, but that attendees leave with a few strategies they can implement immediately in their day to day.
Assisting members in their efforts to promote effective fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, and other emergency services through educational, technical, and legislative means.
